Quintessentially English and a classic archetype from the romantic years of the 1820s, this is both a pendant and a vinaigrette.

To counter the odoriferous fug that often lingered in the streets and environs of the early 19th century, vinaigrettes were a near necessity that jewelers then turned into miniature works of art.

This superb example is fashioned of 18k gold, in yellow, rose and green colors that depict roses, leaves and also a forget me not flower set with turquoise.

In a charming pocket book shape, the back is as embellished and decorative as the front. Click open the lid to reveal a floral gold screen with hand engraved designs of a basket full of flowers. The screen is hinged for easy access to the compartment beneath.

Inside lies what may still be the original sponge-like material that held the perfume or scented vinegar, faint and lightly sweet, but still present.
