In 18k gold, it is oval in shape and deep with two compartments for photographs or mementos.

One side shows a skeleton keyhole. The shaped key fits inside and turns to release the lock and the lid lifts open. In tiny letters are, "Patent" and a worn "W" and possibly an "M" and at least two worn letters.

To the interior, one side still retains the original photograph of a dapper gentleman. The other a curled lock of hair. Both are behind glass with their original frames or rims intact (of 9k gold).

The reverse of the locket is hand engraved in the most charming fancy lettering, "Kate". Note how the "K" letter is fashioned in an organic, decorative manner, with the three remaining letters shaded and worked to perfection.
